The heart is considered the seat of emotion and the origin of affection and love in human being. Both the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary recall the love of God for humanity. Humanity was not redeemed by the blood of Jesus as an exercise in futility. God did not redeem us because he was bored. God sent his only son to save a world lost to sin and death. By focusing on the Sacred Heart, the faithful are invoking the love of God in daily life. Scripture informs Catholics that salvation has its origin in God's love for humanity. Catholics must not forget the majesty of John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believe in him should not perish but have everlasting life." It is this incredible love that has wrought the salvation of millions.
The Immaculate Heart of Mary initiates the faithful Catholic into the maternal love of God. Mary, mother of Jesus, is no ordinary mother. She is the extraordinary mother of our Lord who was chosen from the dawn of time to be the vessel of redemption. Jesus himself gives those of faith to his mother for care, compassion and consolation. She is said to be the gate of heaven, for through her, God made himself manifest in the world. The word of God became human through her. Jesus took on the cloak of humanity in the womb of Mary. her love nurtured our Lord, and saw him through the most trying and dark times. She witnessed the dawn of salvation by giving birth to the Savior. She was with him at the beginning of his ministry. She endured his passion with him as the prophet Simeon said she would. And indeed, she saw him after the resurrection. She saw him ascend to the Creator and was present with the disciples when the Spirit came to comfort and embolden the new Church. She witnessed the history of salvation and her loving presence weaves its way through salvation to the present day. In apparition after apparition, she call faithful Catholics to her son. She is never without her son, calling Catholics to return to the source of faith, the author of their own salvation.
As a faithful witness to the saving power of Jesus, Catholics are called to adore the love of God, cultivating that light in each life. The hearts of Jesus and Mary pulsate with divine love so great, there are no words to describe it. The faithful witness this love in the rising and setting of the sun, in the nourishing shower of an April day or even the smile of an infant. God's love is made manifest in daily life.
